Okay, so after much research/deliberation and fellow Opponauts telling me I’m an idiot, I’ve narrowed my choice of new shocks and springs to Koni STR.T shocks with H&R Sport Springs. They’re sold as a combo for $370 on Tire Rack and come with a lifetime warranty. Thoughts?

(For those who haven’t seen my previous posts, mk4 Jetta, shocks are gone, don’t want to break the bank with legitimate coilovers.) Sorry for the incessant posting guys and gals.

Sounds like a good combo. I’ve always been happy with Konis, too.

Koni makes good stuff. Still think a MKIV isn’t worth the love though.

Basically this is the standard.

It's served me problem free for 90,000 miles (of 190000 total). Maybe I got a Lemon, comparatively speaking.

Had the same on my Tt 225 quattro Best mod ever. Be aware of high rear negative camber and you should get offset bushings perhaps. I let my tire go bald on the inside. Spun and totaled the car in flooding.

Do you really need new springs? If the springs are fine there isn’t much point in replacing them.

You can get a full replacement set of SACHS struts and shocks from FCP Euro for $232 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-st…

If you want to replace your car’s suspension with a very high quality OE replacement, those would be what you really want.

The springs are probably fine, but if I’m able to upgrade for a little more $, then why not get the springs built to match the shocks. That set looks nice if I do decide to keep the OEM setup. My car has 190,000 on it. How long do springs last, anyway?

They can last a long time. If the car is sagging then you need new ones, if not then don’t worry about them.

If I were you, I’d just replace the struts with the SACHS set and save yourself some money. Unless you really want to lower the car a bit, then the Koni setup seems like a decent enough deal. Or get the SACHS struts and pick up a set of lowering springs to go with them.

The only thing I worry about with generic lowering springs is them not being properly matched to the damping the struts provide. That’s why I’m eyeing this Koni set, since it’s all in one with a lifetime warranty, and I know the damping will be perfectly matched to the springs.

Yeah, if lowering is what you want to do then I’d go with the Koni and H&R setup as well. Otherwise, if you just want to fix the car and save your pennies for a new fun car I’d get the SACHS suspension.
